White Point Garden & Colonial Lake
Downtown Charleston isn’t just about pastel row houses and cobblestone streets, it’s also home to some incredibly beautiful parks that blend history, nature, and community life. Two standouts from a Charleston local are White Point Garden (commonly called Battery Park) and Colonial Lake. Whether you’re looking to relax under live oaks, play pickleball, or explore the local food and shopping scene, these parks have something for everyone.
White Point Garden (aka Battery Park)
📍 Location: Southern tip of the Charleston peninsula at East Battery & Murray Blvd.
Tucked away at the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula, White Point Garden is more than just a scenic park, it’s a living piece of Lowcountry history. As a local, I’ve spent countless mornings strolling beneath the canopy of live oaks, coffee in hand, with views of the harbor stretching out beyond the historic mansions of South Battery. The park’s centuries-old cannons and Civil War monuments give it a storybook charm, while shaded benches and coastal breezes make it the perfect spot to unwind or snap that quintessential Charleston photo. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or just out for a peaceful walk, White Point Garden offers a glimpse into the soul of the Holy City.

Why It’s Worth a Visit:
- Currently under construction, reopening in 2026: Renovations are underway to enhance landscaping, improve pathways, and preserve this iconic historic space; expect a grand refresh in time for 2026. While some views are currently sectioned off, it is still 100% worth a trip for the live oaks and history alone.
- Night heron nesting: In spring and summer, you’ll likely spot Black-crowned Night Herons nesting in the oaks. They’re elegant, unbothered by humans, and a surprise delight for birders and casual visitors alike. We can sit for hours watching the mothers feed their babies and listening to their unique calls.
- History: During the Civil War, White Point Garden played a strategic role in the city’s coastal defenses. Today, you’ll still find a striking collection of Civil War-era cannons, mortars, and monuments scattered throughout the park, including a towering Confederate Defenders of Charleston memorial that marks the park’s military significance. The surrounding seawall—part of what’s now known as The Battery—was once lined with fortifications to protect the city from Union attack.

Colonial Lake is where locals go to slow down and soak in the charm of downtown Charleston. Nestled in the Harleston Village neighborhood, this tidal pond turned urban oasis is perfect for morning jogs, dog walks, or catching the golden hour as it reflects off the water. As someone who lives nearby, I love how Colonial Lake blends quiet beauty with community energy. There’s always someone reading on a bench, kids riding scooters, or neighbors chatting as they circle the wide, palm-lined path. With blooming flower beds maintained by local volunteers and picturesque views of historic homes, it’s a peaceful escape that feels quintessentially Charleston.

From a Charleston local’s POV, the best time to go is early morning and weekday evenings. - Botanical charm: Thanks to a major revitalization, Colonial Lake features seasonal plantings, native grasses, and flower beds that put on a show year-round.
