If you’re dreaming of an island that combines laid-back charm with breathtaking beauty, make sure Antigua is at the top of your list. This Caribbean gem surprised us in all the best ways, from the warm, welcoming people to the powdery white-sand beaches. Staying at Cocos Hotel made the trip feel like something out of a dream. We went for our honeymoon, and we’re already planning to come back for our 10th anniversary.
Checking In: Cocos Hotel, Our Adults-Only Oasis
Set along Lignum Vitae Bay, Cocos Hotel is a romantic, boutique hideaway with just 40 cliffside bungalows and zero distractions. It’s couples-only, which made it incredibly easy to meet new friends (shout out to our favorite duos from Ireland, Florida, and Ohio!). Whether we were swapping stories over rum punches or lounging on the beach, the whole place had a warm, easygoing vibe that made everyone feel like instant friends.
One important note: this is a very hilly, cliffside resort. Even in our mid-20s, the hike up to our bungalow left us a little winded. While the views are absolutely worth it, we wouldn’t recommend it for anyone with mobility issues or who might struggle with stairs and steep paths. If you’re up for the climb, though, it definitely adds to the secluded, treehouse-in-paradise feel.

Cocos sits between two white-sand beaches on Antigua’s calm west coast—far removed from the rocky, wind-swept eastern shores. The water here is postcard-clear, barely a ripple, and perfect for floating with a frozen drink in hand. Speaking of drinks: the beach bar slings bottomless cocktails all day long, while the open-air restaurant serves made-to-order meals with a rotating menu and local flair. There’s even a beachfront shack with casual bites if you want something quick between dips.
If you’re up for a little adventure, you can rent jet skis right from the beach (we did, and it was such a fun way to zip around the coastline and take in the scenery from a different perspective). The hotel also provides kayaks, paddleboards, floaties, and snorkel gear, all included and ready to go whenever you feel like being active or just drifting peacefully along the bay.

In true island fashion, a few friendly local cats like to lounge around the restaurant area, usually snoozing under tables or curiously eyeing guests. If you’re a cat lover, it’s a bonus; if not, they’re chill and tend to keep to themselves.
Each night, live local music filled the air with steel drums, reggae, and acoustic covers. By the end of our trip, we found ourselves recognizing the songs and the musicians.
Interestingly, more than half of the resort’s guests were visiting from the UK, with the rest a mix of Americans. It gave the place a relaxed international feel, perfect for swapping travel stories under the stars.
The drive in from the airport was very rural, we passed through a full-on goat farm on our way, but that only added to the charm.

Don’t Miss: Circumnavigating Antigua by Catamaran
One of the best ways to experience Antigua’s beauty is from the water. We took a 6 hour circumnavigation catamaran tour that sailed the full coastline of the island, and it was a highlight of our entire trip.
From celebrity homes (Justin Bieber and Oprah, we see you) to snorkeling stops at Turtle Beach, this tour has it all. We were lucky enough to see not 1, not 2, but 3 Sea Turtles while snorkeling. One was a baby that was literally swimming between us. The boat crew kept the drinks flowing, the vibes upbeat, and the coastline commentary fun and informative. One stop even brought us into English Harbour, where we got an up-close look at the mega yachts, we’re talking next-level luxury.

Thursday Nights at Shirley Heights: Steel Drums & Sunset Views
If you’re in Antigua on a Thursday night, do not skip the Shirley Heights sunset party. We went with the couple from Florida (they rented a car, but Cocos also offers a group shuttle), and it ended up being one of the most fun nights we’ve ever had traveling.
The party kicks off just before sunset with panoramic views of English Harbour, steel drum bands, and grilled local food that’s absolutely worth the line. As the sun dips, the music kicks up, and suddenly you’re dancing under the stars with strangers who feel like old friends. It’s touristy in the best possible way; lively, welcoming, and impossible not to enjoy.

Bonus Tip: Treat Yourself at Sheer Rocks
Right next door at Cocobay Resort, you’ll find Sheer Rocks, an Instagram-famous cliffside restaurant that lives up to the hype. We splurged on a private plunge pool reservation that came with snacks, tapas, and a pitcher of margaritas for just $150 for 6 hours. It was honestly a steal for that kind of setting. I highly recommend booking ahead for this one.

Antigua Stole Our Hearts
Antigua isn’t flashy, it’s soulful. From the moment we arrived to the last toast at sunset, this island wrapped us up in good energy and even better memories. Cocos Hotel gave us the peace we were craving, while the catamaran and Shirley Heights brought the fun.
