If you’re planning a tropical escape that blends natural beauty, adventure, and a little bit of magic, Soufrière in St. Lucia needs to be on your list. We stayed at the Green Fig Resort, a lush hideaway with incredible views and the kind of laid-back charm that makes you want to extend your trip “just one more day.”

One thing to know up front: the forecast always says it’s going to rain. Don’t panic. It rains for about 10 minutes, then the skies clear and the sun is back in full force. Once you’re there, you’ll understand; it’s just part of the rhythm of island life.

Where We Stayed: Green Fig Resort

Green Fig was our home base during our time in Soufrière, and we genuinely loved everything about it. Perched on a lush hillside, the resort offers incredible panoramic views of the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea; it’s the kind of place where you catch yourself just staring out at the horizon, completely in awe.

It’s a small, intimate resort, surrounded by jungle greenery and filled with character. Each room is different, some are open-air, letting in the sounds of the rainforest and the breeze from the sea, while others are fully enclosed with AC if that’s more your style. No two rooms are exactly the same, which adds to the boutique charm.

Green Fig offers a variety of booking options, including all-inclusive packages as well as à la carte stays, so you can choose what works best for your trip. We loved waking up to the sounds of birds and distant tree frogs, and having breakfast each morning with the Pitons right in front of us. Not a bad way to start the day.

There are also three separate pools scattered throughout the property, each with its own vibe, whether you want to lounge in the sun with a book or take a dip by the bar to make friends, there’s a pool for that.

The onsite spa is a lovely little oasis tucked into the hillside, offering massages and treatments in a peaceful, open-air setting. We took advantage of it one afternoon and floated out feeling totally blissed out.

The bartender and other staff were amazing, friendly, helpful, and always ready to make a killer rum punch or share local tips. The bar quickly became one of our favorite spots to wind down after a day of adventuring.

One thing to note, because Green Fig is located right above the town, it can get a bit noisy at night, especially on weekends when there’s music drifting up from below. It didn’t bother us much, but if you’re a light sleeper, you might want to book one of the enclosed rooms.

If you choose to meet any meals at the resort, don’t be surprised if a few local cats wander over to say hello while you’re sipping coffee or lounging by the pool. They’re friendly, low-key, and seem to love the views just as much as the guests do.

Maybe our favorite part of the experience? We met a wonderful couple from London who were also staying there, and we ended up spending a ton of time together exploring the island. That’s the kind of place Green Fig is, it invites connection, slows you down, and lets you experience Saint Lucia in a way that feels both grounded and magical.

Renting a Car & Driving in St. Lucia 🚗💨

Let’s talk about driving in St. Lucia, specifically in and around Soufrière. First things first: they drive on the left side of the road, which definitely takes a moment to get used to if you’re coming from the U.S. or mainland Europe. Add in narrow roads, steep hills, and the occasional goat crossing, and it’s an adventure all on its own.

We rented a standard sedan, and it was totally fine for getting to and from the airport and exploring the town. The road leading up to Green Fig Resort does get a bit steep and twisty, but we managed just fine, and if we survived it, so can you.

That said, some parts of Soufrière are no joke. If you’re thinking about visiting Jade Mountain Resort for the day (which is stunning, by the way), know that many local taxi drivers won’t even take you there because the road is that rough.Luckily, our new friends from London had rented a Suzuki 4×4 and offered to drive. Honestly, it felt like off-roading, but the reward was cocktails served in coconuts at the beachfront bar with sweeping views. Worth every bump.

If you’re planning to explore beyond town or hit more remote resorts and beaches, definitely opt for a 4-wheel drive vehicle. If you’re sticking to the basics and your hotel is centrally located, a regular car will get the job done.

Be sure to bring an international driver’s license (and check your rental company’s requirements ahead of time). It’s technically required, and having one will make the process much smoother.

Where (and What) to eat in Soufrière 🍴🌴

One of our favorite parts of any trip is the food, and Soufrière did not disappoint. From breakfast with a view to cocktails and whole fish by the sea, here’s a quick breakdown of what we ate and loved:

Breakfast at Green Fig
We started every morning with breakfast at Green Fig Resort, which was included with our stay. Breakfast included fresh fruit, local eggs, crispy toast, and strong coffee with that million-dollar view of the Pitons. Not a bad way to wake up.

Lunch in Town – Petit Peak
One afternoon we stopped at Petit Peak, a casual spot right on the water in the heart of Soufrière. The standout? The wings! They were crispy, saucy, and packed with flavor. A perfect quick bite after a morning of exploring.

Boat Tour Buffet – Michael’s @ Jen Mwen
During our boat excursion, lunch was included at Michael’s @ Jen Mwen, a breezy open-air spot with buffet-style dishes and live local music. The food was hearty and flavorful, and the vibe was so fun; exactly what you’d want after snorkeling and soaking in the sulphur springs.

Dinner Highlights:

  • Green Fig Resort: We had one dinner right at our hotel, and it was a lovely, low-key night. The menu rotates often, and everything we tried was fresh and well-prepared.
  • Voila Restaurant: Another night, we headed into town with our London friends and ate at Voila. This one surprised us in the best way. They had delicious fresh-caught whole fish, perfectly grilled, and maybe the best piña coladas of the trip. We actually found our new favorite hot sauce Barons West Indian Hot Sauce at Voila and now we can’t stop ordering refills, it’s too good.
  • Treetop Restaurant: For our final night, we went out with a bang. Treetop offers fine dining with a heavy Indian influence, we’re still dreaming about the butter chicken and the desserts (yes, plural). Elegant, cozy, and flavorful.

Many restaurants in Soufrière are small and laid-back, so don’t expect anything super fancy, but do expect incredible flavors, island charm, and maybe even a few dogs, goats and chickens wandering nearby.

Bonus Stop: Coffee at Hotel Chocolat
If you’re in the mood for a good cup of coffee (or just want an excuse to visit a cocoa plantation), stop by Hotel Chocolat. Their on-site café serves up rich espresso drinks and chocolate treats with a view. It’s a beautiful, serene spot and a great midday escape if you’re exploring nearby.

Boat Excursion: The Best of Land & Sea ⛵🌋🍹

One of our favorite days in Saint Lucia was spent on a Land & Sea Tour that truly felt like a greatest-hits reel of everything Soufrière has to offer. We booked the tour through Edmund Tours St. Lucia, and it was smooth, fun, and packed with unforgettable moments.

Since we were staying right in Soufrière, Edmund himself picked us up personally (a fun little perk of being so close to the starting point). Most of the other guests were coming from the northern part of the island (where most of the big resorts are), so they had a long drive down and were the last to be dropped off at the end of the day. Being based nearby definitely made the whole experience more relaxed and efficient.

Here’s what our day looked like:

🦇 Bat Cave
Yes, an actual bat cave! We cruised right past it along the cliffs and could hear the high-pitched squeaks of the bats echoing from inside. You don’t go in, but you get close enough for a spooky-cool moment that kicks off the tour in a fun way.

🐠 Snorkeling at Sugar Beach
Next, we pulled into the bay at Sugar Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen; framed perfectly between the Pitons. We jumped off the boat and snorkeled in crystal-clear water full of coral, tropical fish, and calm, swimmable waves. If you have a GoPro or waterproof phone case, bring it! The underwater views are stunning.

🍽️ Lunch at Michael’s @ Jen Mwen
After rinsing off, we headed to Michael’s @ Jen Mwen, a local spot where we had a buffet-style lunch with live Caribbean music and incredible views. We were expecting a “tour lunch” to be a bit basic, but it was fresh, filling, and so much better than we anticipated.

🌋 Sulphur Springs & Mud Bath
Back on land, we headed to the famous Sulphur Springs, where you can bathe in warm volcanic water and slather yourself with mineral-rich mud. It’s hot, messy, and totally unique; and honestly, our skin felt amazing afterward. We joked that we walked in looking like tourists and walked out ten years younger (and grayer).

🍹 Rum Punch, All Day Long
Oh, and we can’t forget, free rum punch was flowing the entire time we were on the boat. It’s their house recipe and stronger than you’d think, so pace yourself! Between the sunshine, sea breeze, and island music playing on board, it was just good vibes all day.

This tour was such a highlight of our trip. It packed adventure, relaxation, and local flavor into one perfect day, and having it start and end just minutes from our hotel made it even better. If you’re staying in Soufrière, booking a tour with Edmund Tours is a no-brainer. It’s the easiest way to see the island’s biggest natural wonders without the stress of coordinating everything yourself.

Hiking in Soufrière 🥾🌈

If you’re thinking about doing some hiking while in Soufrière, you’re in for a treat. The area is home to some of the most iconic landscapes in the Caribbean, and there are a few different trails depending on your energy level (and how early you’re willing to get up).

  • Gros Piton: This is the more popular of the two Piton hikes and considered the “easier” one; though it’s still a serious workout. Expect a 4–5 hour roundtrip climb that requires a guide (they’re included in your entrance fee, which is typically around $50 USD per person). You’ll need to start early to avoid the heat, but the views at the summit make it worth it.
  • Petit Piton: This one’s for the very adventurous. It’s much steeper, more technical, and not officially maintained for tourism, so it requires a private guide (which can be arranged locally), often for $60–$100 USD+ per person depending on the guide and group size. It’s beautiful but definitely not recommended for casual hikers or anyone afraid of heights.
  • Tet Paul Nature Trail: This is the one we opted for and we can’t recommend it enough, especially if you’re short on time or not up for a strenuous trek.

Tet Paul is a short, easy hike that takes about 45 minutes round trip, but the views are unreal. You get panoramic, postcard-perfect views of both Pitons, the Caribbean Sea, and even Saint Vincent on a clear day. It’s family-friendly, low-effort, and only costs about $10 USD per person. You can do Tet Paul without a guide, but there’s often someone from the family who owns the land available to walk with you, share the history of the trail, and point out native plants. Tips are always appreciated.

At the top, there’s a small, shaded area where you can grab a cold beer, shop for a local souvenir, and chill with the resident cats who live up there. We were lucky enough to catch a rainbow stretching over the Pitons, and it honestly felt like a scene from a movie. For such a short and simple trail, it ended up being one of our favorite memories from the trip.

Final Thoughts:

Soufrière offers that perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, wrapped in a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. One moment you’re hiking through lush rainforest or snorkeling between the Pitons, and the next you’re sipping rum punch with your toes in the sand, or enjoying dinner with live music and a breeze off the sea.

We came for the views, the beaches, and the boat days… but left talking about the people, the food, and those little moments that caught us off guard (like seeing a rainbow stretch across both Pitons or meeting new friends from across the world at our hotel bar).

Between the quick rain showers, warm sunshine, and endless opportunities to explore both land and sea, this trip ended up being even more magical than we expected. If you’re considering Saint Lucia, make Soufrière your home base; you won’t regret it.
